Herby is in his 5th year in the program, and he continues to live in Port-Au-Prince with his two brothers. His older brother is his primary caretaker, but he is unemployed so finances are extremely tight. Itís a struggle just to keep food on the table, so without the RISING program it would be next to impossible to make it through school.
In spite of lifeís many challenges, Herby remains optimistic and focused on his studies. His dream would be to become a surgeon one day. He says half-joking that he has a steady hand, and he assures us that he has no squeamishness about blood, both good traits for a surgeon. He knows itís a long shot, but he would love to study medicine abroad after he finishes university in Haiti. He is well aware that many doctors in Haiti lack training, and he wants to help change this trend.

It all starts with access to education. For RISING Students, this means providing whatever each student needs to return to school–tuition, uniforms, lunches, and more.
We all need the help of people who've been there before. RISING mentors care for and encourage the holistic growth of each student–mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.
These are the tools students need to succeed, such as access to computers and the Internet and a local Resource Center to study, connect, and grow together.
